I will watch for the LORD. I will wait confidently for God, who will save me. My God will hear me.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 7:7
I will watch for the LORD. I will wait confidently for God, who will save me. My God will hear me.
TODAY'S READING:
Israel's Moral Corruption
1It's hopeless! I am like a hungry person who finds no fruit left on the trees and no grapes on the vines. All the grapes and all the tasty figs have been picked.2There is not an honest person left in the land, no one loyal to God. Everyone is waiting for a chance to commit murder. Everyone hunts down their own people.3They are all experts at doing evil. Officials and judges ask for bribes. The influential people tell them what they want, and so they scheme together.4Even the best and most honest of them are as worthless as weeds.
The day has come when God will punish the people, as he warned them through their watchmen, the prophets. Now they are in confusion.5Don't believe your neighbor or trust your friend. Be careful what you say even to your husband or wife.6 In these times sons treat their fathers like fools, daughters oppose their mothers, and young women quarrel with their mothers-in-law; your enemies are the members of your own family.
7But I will watch for the Lord; I will wait confidently for God, who will save me. My God will hear me.
The Lord Brings Salvation
8Our enemies have no reason to gloat over us. We have fallen, but we will rise again. We are in darkness now, but the Lord will give us light.9We have sinned against the Lord, so now we must endure his anger for a while. But in the end he will defend us and right the wrongs that have been done to us. He will bring us out to the light; we will live to see him save us.10Then our enemies will see this and be disgraced—the same enemies who taunted us by asking, “Where is the Lord your God?” We will see them defeated, trampled down like mud in the streets.
11People of Jerusalem, the time to rebuild the city walls is coming. At that time your territory will be enlarged.12Your people will return to you from everywhere—from Assyria in the east, from Egypt in the south, from the region of the Euphrates River, from distant seas and far-off mountains.13But the earth will become a desert because of the wickedness of those who live on it.
The Lord's Compassion on Israel
14Be a shepherd to your people, Lord, the people you have chosen. Although they live apart in the wilderness, there is fertile land around them. Let them go and feed in the rich pastures of Bashan and Gilead, as they did long ago.
15Work miracles for us, Lord, as you did in the days when you brought us out of Egypt.16The nations will see this and be frustrated in spite of all their strength. In dismay they will close their mouths and cover their ears.17They will crawl in the dust like snakes; they will come from their fortresses, trembling and afraid. They will turn in fear to the Lord our God.
18There is no other god like you, O Lord; you forgive the sins of your people who have survived. You do not stay angry forever, but you take pleasure in showing us your constant love.19You will be merciful to us once again. You will trample our sins underfoot and send them to the bottom of the sea!20You will show your faithfulness and constant love to your people, the descendants of Abraham and of Jacob, as you promised our ancestors long ago.
REFLECT:
Why does Micah feel hopeless (verses 1-6)? What causes him to express confidence in God (verses 7-13)? What feelings expressed by Micah can you resonate with? Based on your reading of the book of Micah, do God’s judgments seem fair? Why or why not? Reread verses 18-20. Do you find these verses to be a hopeful conclusion to the book of Micah? What promises are given?
#PRAY
Almighty God, when I see the forces of evil at work, I, too, feel hopeless. Remind me, O God, that you are in control. O Lord God, there is no other god like you. You are faithful, merciful, and forgiving, and you show constant love to your people. Amen.
CONCERN:

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

The LORD has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 6:8
The LORD has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.
TODAY'S READING:
The Lord's Case against Israel
1Listen to the Lord's case against Israel.
Arise, O Lord, and present your case; let the mountains and the hills hear what you say.
2You mountains, you everlasting foundations of the earth, listen to the Lord's case! The Lord has a case against his people. He is going to bring an accusation against Israel.
3The Lord says, “My people, what have I done to you? How have I been a burden to you? Answer me.4 I brought you out of Egypt; I rescued you from slavery; I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to lead you.5 My people, remember what King Balak of Moab planned to do to you and how Balaam son of Beor answered him. Remember the things that happened on the way from the camp at Acacia to Gilgal. Remember these things and you will realize what I did in order to save you.”
What the Lord Requires
6What shall I bring to the Lord, the God of heaven, when I come to worship him? Shall I bring the best calves to burn as offerings to him?7Will the Lord be pleased if I bring him thousands of sheep or endless streams of olive oil? Shall I offer him my first-born child to pay for my sins?8No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.
9It is wise to fear the Lord. He calls to the city, “Listen, you people who assemble in the city!10In the houses of evil people are treasures which they got dishonestly. They use false measures, a thing that I hate.11How can I forgive those who use false scales and weights?12Your rich people exploit the poor, and all of you are liars.13So I have already begun your ruin and destruction because of your sins.14You will eat, but not be satisfied—in fact you will still be hungry. You will carry things off, but you will not be able to save them; anything you do save I will destroy in war.15You will sow grain, but not harvest the crop. You will press oil from olives, but never get to use it. You will make wine, but never drink it.16 This will happen because you have followed the evil practices of King Omri and of his son, King Ahab. You have continued their policies, and so I will bring you to ruin, and everyone will despise you. People everywhere will treat you with contempt.”
REFLECT:
How does the LORD begin the case against Israel (verse 3)? Of what does the LORD remind the people (verses 4 and 5)? Have you ever forgotten the ways in which God has blessed you? Reread verses 6-8. What does God require in order to restore a broken relationship with him?
#PRAY
Lord God, help me to do what you require of me: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with you. Trusting in your steadfast love and mercy, I pray in your holy name. Amen.

We will worship and obey the LORD our God forever and ever.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 4:5B
We will worship and obey the LORD our God forever and ever.
TODAY'S READING:
The Lord's Universal Reign of Peace
(Isaiah 2.2-4)
1In days to come
the mountain where the Temple stands
will be the highest one of all,
towering above all the hills.
Many nations will come streaming to it,
2and their people will say,
“Let us go up the hill of the Lord,
to the Temple of Israel's God.
He will teach us what he wants us to do;
we will walk in the paths he has chosen.
For the Lord's teaching comes from Jerusalem;
from Zion he speaks to his people.”
3 He will settle disputes among the nations,
among the great powers near and far.
They will hammer their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nations will never again go to war,
never prepare for battle again.
4 Everyone will live in peace
among their own vineyards and fig trees,
and no one will make them afraid.
The Lord Almighty has promised this.
5Each nation worships and obeys its own god, but we will worship and obey the Lord our God forever and ever.
Israel Will Return from Exile
6“The time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will gather together the people I punished, those who have suffered in exile.7They are crippled and far from home, but I will make a new beginning with those who are left, and they will become a great nation. I will rule over them on Mount Zion from that time on and forever.”
8And you, Jerusalem, where God, like a shepherd from his lookout tower, watches over his people, will once again be the capital of the kingdom that was yours.9Why do you cry out so loudly? Why are you suffering like a woman in labor? Is it because you have no king, and your counselors are dead?10Twist and groan, people of Jerusalem, like a woman giving birth, for now you will have to leave the city and live in the open country. You will have to go to Babylon, but there the Lord will save you from your enemies.11Many nations have gathered to attack you. They say, “Jerusalem must be destroyed! We will see this city in ruins!”12But these nations do not know what is in the Lord's mind. They do not realize that they have been gathered together to be punished in the same way that grain is brought in to be threshed.
13The Lord says, “People of Jerusalem, go and punish your enemies! I will make you as strong as a bull with iron horns and bronze hoofs. You will crush many nations, and the wealth they got by violence you will present to me, the Lord of the whole world.”
1People of Jerusalem, gather your forces! We are besieged! They are attacking the leader of Israel!
REFLECT:
Today’s reading begins with an image of a high mountain on which the Temple stands. It is in contrast to the concluding verse in the previous chapter where the Temple mount has been reduced to a forest (3:12). How does Micah describe worship in Jerusalem and God’s reign of peace (verses 1-4)? What promise is given to those who have been living in exile (verses 6 and 7)? What message of hope can you proclaim today?
#PRAY
God of justice and peace, we pray for an end to warfare and for your reign of peace. Teach us to walk in the paths you have chosen and to worship and obey you. Thank you for new beginnings and the hope we find in you. Amen.

When he comes, he will rule his people with the strength that comes from the LORD and with the majesty of the LORD God himself.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 5:4A
When he comes, he will rule his people with the strength that comes from the LORD and with the majesty of the LORD God himself.
God Promises a Ruler from Bethlehem
2 The Lord says, “Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are one of the smallest towns in Judah, but out of you I will bring a ruler for Israel, whose family line goes back to ancient times.”
3So the Lord will abandon his people to their enemies until the woman who is to give birth has her son. Then those Israelites who are in exile will be reunited with their own people.4When he comes, he will rule his people with the strength that comes from the Lord and with the majesty of the Lord God himself. His people will live in safety because people all over the earth will acknowledge his greatness,5and he will bring peace.
Deliverance and Punishment
When the Assyrians invade our country and break through our defenses, we will send our strongest leaders to fight them.6 By force of arms they will conquer Assyria, the land of Nimrod, and they will save us from the Assyrians when they invade our territory.
7The people of Israel who survive will be like refreshing dew sent by the Lord for many nations, like showers on growing plants. They will depend on God, not people.8Those who are left among the nations will be like a lion hunting for food in a forest or a pasture: it gets in among the sheep, pounces on them, and tears them to pieces—and there is no hope of rescue.9Israel will conquer her enemies and destroy them all.
10The Lord says, “At that time I will take away your horses and destroy your chariots.11I will destroy the cities in your land and tear down all your defenses.12I will destroy the magic charms you use and leave you without any fortunetellers.13I will destroy your idols and sacred stone pillars; no longer will you worship the things that you yourselves have made.14I will pull down the images of the goddess Asherah in your land and destroy your cities.15And in my great anger I will take revenge on all nations that have not obeyed me.”
REFLECT:
Reread verse 2. Christians have interpreted this verse as referring to Jesus, and this verse is quoted in Matthew’s account of the birth of Jesus (Matthew 2:6). How is God’s promised ruler described (verses 4-5a)? Micah goes on to describe a time of deliverance and punishment. Why are the people of Israel who survive described as “refreshing dew” (verse 7)? What will the LORD destroy (verses 10-14)? Why?
#PRAY
God of deliverance, help me to reach out today to someone who may be hurting so that I may speak a word of hope and encouragement and share the refreshing dew of your love and peace. Amen.

But as for me, the LORD fills me with his spirit and power, and gives me a sense of justice.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 3:8A
But as for me, the LORD fills me with his spirit and power, and gives me a sense of justice.
TODAY'S READING:
Micah Denounces Israel's Leaders
1Listen, you rulers of Israel! You are supposed to be concerned about justice,2yet you hate what is good and you love what is evil. You skin my people alive and tear the flesh off their bones.3You eat my people up. You strip off their skin, break their bones, and chop them up like meat for the pot.4The time is coming when you will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer you. He will not listen to your prayers, for you have done evil.
5My people are deceived by prophets who promise peace to those who pay them, but threaten war for those who don't. To these prophets the Lord says,6“Prophets, your day is almost over; the sun is going down on you. Because you mislead my people, you will have no more prophetic visions, and you will not be able to predict anything.”7Those who predict the future will be disgraced by their failure. They will all be humiliated because God does not answer them.
8But as for me, the Lord fills me with his spirit and power, and gives me a sense of justice and the courage to tell the people of Israel what their sins are.9Listen to me, you rulers of Israel, you that hate justice and turn right into wrong.10You are building God's city, Jerusalem, on a foundation of murder and injustice.11The city's rulers govern for bribes, the priests interpret the Law for pay, the prophets give their revelations for money—and they all claim that the Lord is with them. “No harm will come to us,” they say. “The Lord is with us.”
12 And so, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of ruins, and the Temple hill will become a forest.
REFLECT:
Prophets were to remind people of how God wanted them to live, and they could receive goods or money in return for doing their religious duties. Micah denounces those prophets who take payments but are not willing to speak out against injustice or encourage the leaders to do what is right (verses 5-7). What warning does Micah deliver to those prophets who mislead the people? What false claim do these prophets make (verse 11)? How has God empowered Micah (verse 8)? What sets him apart as a true prophet? Who are the voices for justice today?
#PRAY
Lord God, you hear the cries of those who are victims of injustice. Fill me with your Spirit and power and give me the courage to speak out against injustice. Amen.

God will open the way for them and lead them out of exile. They will break out of the city gates and go free. Their king, the LORD himself, will lead them out.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 2:13
TODAY'S READING:
The Fate of Those Who Oppress the Poor
1How terrible it will be for those who lie awake and plan evil! When morning comes, as soon as they have the chance, they do the evil they planned.2When they want fields, they seize them; when they want houses, they take them. No one's family or property is safe.
3And so the Lord says, “I am planning to bring disaster on you, and you will not be able to escape it. You are going to find yourselves in trouble, and then you will not walk so proudly any more.4When that time comes, people will use the story about you as an example of disaster, and they will sing this song of despair about your experience:
We are completely ruined!
The Lord has taken our land away
And given it to those who took us captive.”
5So then, when the time comes for the land to be given back to the Lord's people, there will be no share for any of you.
6The people preach at me and say, “Don't preach at us. Don't preach about all that. God is not going to disgrace us.7Do you think the people of Israel are under a curse? Has the Lord lost his patience? Would he really do such things? Doesn't he speak kindly to those who do right?”
8The Lord replies, “You attack my people like enemies. Men return from battle, thinking they are safe at home, but there you are, waiting to steal the coats off their backs.9You drive the women of my people out of the homes they love, and you have robbed their children of my blessings forever.10Get up and go; there is no safety here any more. Your sins have doomed this place to destruction.
11“These people want the kind of prophet who goes around full of lies and deceit and says, ‘I prophesy that wine and liquor will flow for you.’
12“But I will gather you together, all you people of Israel that are left. I will bring you together like sheep returning to the fold. Like a pasture full of sheep, your land will once again be filled with many people.”
13God will open the way for them and lead them out of exile. They will break out of the city gates and go free. Their king, the Lord himself, will lead them out.
REFLECT:
What is Micah’s warning to those who plan evil? Reread verses 6 and 7. Why do those who are committing evil take issue with Micah’s words? What kind of prophet do they want (verse 11)? What is the reaction to prophetic voices in our society today? What message of hope does Micah deliver (verses 12 and 13)?
#PRAY
Lord God, like a shepherd you gather us into your fold. In the security of your love I find peace and rest. Lead me, Lord, in the way of your justice and truth. Amen.

The LORD is coming from his holy place; he will come down and walk on the tops of the mountains.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: MICAH 1:3
The LORD is coming from his holy place; he will come down and walk on the tops of the mountains.
TODAY'S READING:
1 During the time that Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah, the Lord gave this message to Micah, who was from the town of Moresheth. The Lord revealed to Micah all these things about Samaria and Jerusalem.
A Lament for Samaria and Jerusalem
2Hear this, all you nations;
listen to this, all who live on earth!
The Sovereign Lord will testify against you.
Listen! He speaks from his heavenly temple.
3The Lord is coming from his holy place;
he will come down and walk on the tops of the mountains.
4Then the mountains will melt under him
like wax in a fire;
they will pour down into the valleys
like water pouring down a hill.
5All this will happen because the people of Israel have sinned and rebelled against God. Who is to blame for Israel's rebellion? Samaria, the capital city itself! Who is guilty of idolatry in Judah? Jerusalem itself!6So the Lord says, “I will make Samaria a pile of ruins in the open country, a place for planting grapevines. I will pour the rubble of the city down into the valley, and will lay bare the city's foundations.7All its precious idols will be smashed to pieces, everything given to its temple prostitutes will be destroyed by fire, and all its images will become a desolate heap. Samaria acquired these things for its fertility rites, and now her enemies will carry them off for temple prostitutes elsewhere.”
8Then Micah said, “Because of this I will mourn and lament. To show my sorrow, I will walk around barefoot and naked. I will howl like a jackal and wail like an ostrich.9Samaria's wounds cannot be healed, and Judah is about to suffer in the same way; destruction has reached the gates of Jerusalem itself, where my people live.”
The Enemy Approaches Jerusalem
10Don't tell our enemies in Gath about our defeat; don't let them see you weeping. People of Beth Leaphrah, show your despair by rolling in the dust!11You people of Shaphir, go into exile, naked and ashamed. Those who live in Zaanan do not dare to come out of their city. When you hear the people of Bethezel mourn, you will know that there is no refuge there.12The people of Maroth anxiously wait for relief, because the Lord has brought disaster close to Jerusalem.13You that live in Lachish, hitch the horses to the chariots. You imitated the sins of Israel and so caused Jerusalem to sin.14And now, people of Judah, say good-bye to the town of Moresheth Gath. The kings of Israel will get no help from the town of Achzib.
15People of Mareshah, the Lord will hand you over to an enemy, who is going to capture your town. The leaders of Israel will go and hide in the cave at Adullam.16People of Judah, cut off your hair in mourning for the children you love. Make yourselves as bald as vultures, because your children will be taken away from you into exile.
REFLECT:
What sins have the people committed? What will be the consequences? How is Micah expressing his sorrow (verse 8)? What does he say to the people of Judah (verse 16)? How do you express sorrow or remorse?
#PRAY
Lord God, from your heavenly temple you see everything we do. You know my faults and shortcomings. Order my steps this day so that what I do is pleasing in your sight. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.

Always be fair and just, so that you will occupy the land that the LORD your God is giving you and so that you will continue to live there.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 16:20
Always be fair and just, so that you will occupy the land that the LORD your God is giving you and so that you will continue to live there.
TODAY'S READING:
The Administration of Justice
18“Appoint judges and other officials in every town that the Lord your God gives you. These men are to judge the people impartially.19 They are not to be unjust or show partiality in their judgments; and they are not to accept bribes, for gifts blind the eyes even of wise and honest men, and cause them to give wrong decisions.20Always be fair and just, so that you will occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you and so that you will continue to live there.
21 “When you make an altar for the Lord your God, do not put beside it a wooden symbol of the goddess Asherah.22 And do not set up any stone pillar for idol worship; the Lord hates them.
1“Do not sacrifice to the Lord your God cattle or sheep that have any defects; the Lord hates this.
2“Suppose you hear that in one of your towns some men or women have sinned against the Lord and broken his covenant3 by worshiping and serving other gods or the sun or the moon or the stars, contrary to the Lord's command.4If you hear such a report, then investigate it thoroughly. If it is true that this evil thing has happened in Israel,5then take them outside the town and stone them to death.6 However, they may be put to death only if two or more witnesses testify against them; they are not to be put to death if there is only one witness.7 The witnesses are to throw the first stones, and then the rest of the people are to stone them; in this way you will get rid of this evil.
8“It may be that some cases will be too difficult for the local judges to decide, such as certain cases of property rights or of bodily injury or those cases that involve a distinction between murder and manslaughter. When this happens, go to the one place of worship chosen by the Lord your God,9and present your case to the levitical priests and to the judge who is in office at that time, and let them decide the case.10They will give their decision, and you are to do exactly as they tell you.11Accept their verdict and follow their instructions in every detail.12Anyone who dares to disobey either the judge or the priest on duty is to be put to death; in this way you will remove this evil from Israel.13Then everyone will hear of it and be afraid, and no one else will dare to act in such a way.
REFLECT:
Israel’s system of local government and courts was unique because it was based on God’s laws and the command to treat all people equally, whether they were rich or poor, powerful or weak. How does that system compare with the legal system today? Does today’s legal system operate fairly and impartially?
#PRAY
Merciful and loving God, teach me to be fair and impartial in all my dealings with others. May I be guided by your laws and your righteousness. Amen.

Moses Receives the Commandments Again
(Exodus 34.1-10)
1“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Cut two stone tablets like the first ones and make a wooden Box to put them in. Come up to me on the mountain,2and I will write on those tablets what I wrote on the tablets that you broke, and then you are to put them in the Box.’
3“So I made a Box of acacia wood and cut two stone tablets like the first ones and took them up the mountain.4Then the Lord wrote on those tablets the same words that he had written the first time, the Ten Commandments that he gave you when he spoke from the fire on the day you were gathered at the mountain. The Lord gave me the tablets,5and I turned and went down the mountain. Then, just as the Lord had commanded, I put them in the Box that I had made—and they have been there ever since.”
(6 The Israelites set out from the wells that belonged to the people of Jaakan, and went to Moserah. There Aaron died and was buried, and his son Eleazar succeeded him as priest.7From there they went to Gudgodah and then on to Jotbathah, a well-watered place.8 At that time the Lord appointed the men of the tribe of Levi to be in charge of the Covenant Box, to serve him as priests, and to pronounce blessings in his name. And these are still their duties.9That is why the tribe of Levi received no land as the other tribes did; what they received was the privilege of being the Lord's priests, as the Lord your God promised.)
10 “I stayed on the mountain forty days and nights, as I did the first time. The Lord listened to me once more and agreed not to destroy you.11Then he told me to go and lead you, so that you could take possession of the land that he had promised to give to your ancestors.
What God Demands
12“Now, people of Israel, listen to what the Lord your God demands of you: Worship the Lord and do all that he commands. Love him, serve him with all your heart,13and obey all his laws. I am giving them to you today for your benefit.14To the Lord belong even the highest heavens; the earth is his also, and everything on it.15But the Lord's love for your ancestors was so strong that he chose you instead of any other people, and you are still his chosen people.16So then, from now on be obedient to the Lord and stop being stubborn.17 The Lord your God is supreme over all gods and over all powers. He is great and mighty, and he is to be obeyed. He does not show partiality, and he does not accept bribes.18 He makes sure that orphans and widows are treated fairly; he loves the foreigners who live with our people, and gives them food and clothes.19So then, show love for those foreigners, because you were once foreigners in Egypt.20Have reverence for the Lord your God and worship only him. Be faithful to him and make your promises in his name alone.21Praise him—he is your God, and you have seen with your own eyes the great and astounding things that he has done for you.22 When your ancestors went to Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.

[Moses said:] “Never forget the LORD your God or turn to other gods to worship and serve them.”

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 8:19A
[Moses said:] “Never forget the LORD your God or turn to other gods to worship and serve them.”
TODAY'S READING:
A Good Land to Be Possessed
1“Obey faithfully all the laws that I have given you today, so that you may live, increase in number, and occupy the land that the Lord promised to your ancestors.2Remember how the Lord your God led you on this long journey through the desert these past forty years, sending hardships to test you, so that he might know what you intended to do and whether you would obey his commands.3 He made you go hungry, and then he gave you manna to eat, food that you and your ancestors had never eaten before. He did this to teach you that you must not depend on bread alone to sustain you, but on everything that the Lord says.4During these forty years your clothes have not worn out, nor have your feet swollen up.5 Remember that the Lord your God corrects and punishes you just as parents discipline their children.6So then, do as the Lord has commanded you: live according to his laws and obey him.7The Lord your God is bringing you into a fertile land—a land that has rivers and springs, and underground streams gushing out into the valleys and hills;8a land that produces wheat and barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and honey.9There you will never go hungry or ever be in need. Its rocks have iron in them, and from its hills you can mine copper.10You will have all you want to eat, and you will give thanks to the Lord your God for the fertile land that he has given you.
Warnings against Forgetting the Lord
11 “Make certain that you do not forget the Lord your God; do not fail to obey any of his laws that I am giving you today.12When you have all you want to eat and have built good houses to live in13and when your cattle and sheep, your silver and gold, and all your other possessions have increased,14be sure that you do not become proud and forget the Lord your God who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves.15He led you through that vast and terrifying desert where there were poisonous snakes and scorpions. In that dry and waterless land he made water flow out of solid rock for you.16In the desert he gave you manna to eat, food that your ancestors had never eaten. He sent hardships on you to test you, so that in the end he could bless you with good things.17So then, you must never think that you have made yourselves wealthy by your own power and strength.18Remember that it is the Lord your God who gives you the power to become rich. He does this because he is still faithful today to the covenant that he made with your ancestors.19Never forget the Lord your God or turn to other gods to worship and serve them. If you do, then I warn you today that you will certainly be destroyed.20If you do not obey the Lord, then you will be destroyed just like those nations that he is going to destroy as you advance.
REFLECT:
How did God care for the people throughout their forty years in the desert? What warning is given if the people fail to obey the LORD? Have you ever experienced consequences as a result of not acting according to the will of God?
#PRAY
Merciful and loving God, I thank and praise you for your constant love and care. Remind me never to forget that you are the source of all blessings. May all I say and do this day bring glory and honor to you. Amen.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 7:12
[Moses said:] “If you listen to these commands and obey them faithfully, then the LORD your God will continue to keep his covenant with you and will show you his constant love, as he promised your ancestors.”
TODAY'S READING:
The Blessings of Obedience
(Deuteronomy 28.1-14)
12 “If you listen to these commands and obey them faithfully, then the Lord your God will continue to keep his covenant with you and will show you his constant love, as he promised your ancestors.13He will love you and bless you, so that you will increase in number and have many children; he will bless your fields, so that you will have grain, wine, and olive oil; and he will bless you by giving you many cattle and sheep. He will give you all these blessings in the land that he promised your ancestors he would give to you.14No people in the world will be as richly blessed as you. None of you nor any of your livestock will be sterile.15The Lord will protect you from all sickness, and he will not bring on you any of the dreadful diseases that you experienced in Egypt, but he will bring them on all your enemies.16Destroy every nation that the Lord your God places in your power, and do not show them any mercy. Do not worship their gods, for that would be fatal.
17“Do not tell yourselves that these peoples outnumber you and that you cannot drive them out.18Do not be afraid of them; remember what the Lord your God did to the king of Egypt and to all his people.19Remember the terrible plagues that you saw with your own eyes, the miracles and wonders, and the great power and strength by which the Lord your God set you free. In the same way that he destroyed the Egyptians, he will destroy all these people that you now fear.20He will even cause panic among them and will destroy those who escape and go into hiding.21So do not be afraid of these people. The Lord your God is with you; he is a great God and one to be feared.22Little by little he will drive out these nations as you advance. You will not be able to destroy them all at once, for, if you did, the number of wild animals would increase and be a threat to you.23The Lord will put your enemies in your power and make them panic until they are destroyed.24He will put their kings in your power. You will kill them, and they will be forgotten. No one will be able to stop you; you will destroy everyone.25Burn their idols. Do not desire the silver or gold that is on them, and do not take it for yourselves. If you do, that will be fatal, because the Lord hates idolatry.26Do not bring any of these idols into your homes, or the same curse will be on you that is on them. You must hate and despise these idols, because they are under the Lord's curse.
REFLECT:
Reread verses 12-16. What blessings are promised? In verse 16, what warning is given? Reread verses 17-24. What does Moses say to address the people’s fears? Of what does he remind them? Are there times in your life when you are fearful? What helps you in those times? Where do you turn for comfort?

[Moses said:] “You belong to the LORD your God."

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 7:6A
TODAY'S READING:
The Lord's Own People
(Exodus 34.11-16)
1 “The Lord your God will bring you into the land that you are going to occupy, and he will drive many nations out of it. As you advance, he will drive out seven nations larger and more powerful than you: the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.2When the Lord your God places these people in your power and you defeat them, you must put them all to death. Do not make an alliance with them or show them any mercy.3Do not marry any of them, and do not let your children marry any of them,4because then they would lead your children away from the Lord to worship other gods. If that happens, the Lord will be angry with you and destroy you at once.5 So then, tear down their altars, break their sacred stone pillars in pieces, cut down their symbols of the goddess Asherah, and burn their idols.6 Do this because you belong to the Lord your God. From all the peoples on earth he chose you to be his own special people.
7“The Lord did not love you and choose you because you outnumbered other peoples; you were the smallest nation on earth.8But the Lord loved you and wanted to keep the promise that he made to your ancestors. That is why he saved you by his great might and set you free from slavery to the king of Egypt.9 Remember that the Lord your God is the only God and that he is faithful. He will keep his covenant and show his constant love to a thousand generations of those who love him and obey his commands,10but he will not hesitate to punish those who hate him.11Now then, obey what you have been taught; obey all the laws that I have given you today.
REFLECT:
When the Israelites were preparing to occupy Canaan, they were told to defeat the people who occupied the land. Total destruction was intended in order to remove temptations that would cause the people to turn their backs on the LORD. Are there temptations today that cause people to turn away from God?

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 6:7

Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working.
TODAY'S READING:
The Great Commandment
1“These are all the laws that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you. Obey them in the land that you are about to enter and occupy.2As long as you live, you and your descendants are to honor the Lord your God and obey all his laws that I am giving you, so that you may live in that land a long time.3Listen to them, people of Israel, and obey them! Then all will go well with you, and you will become a mighty nation and live in that rich and fertile land, just as the Lord, the God of our ancestors, has promised.
4 “Israel, remember this! The Lord—and the Lord alone—is our God.5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.6 Never forget these commands that I am giving you today.7Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working.8Tie them on your arms and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder.9Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.
Warning against Disobedience
10 “Just as the Lord your God promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he will give you a land with large and prosperous cities which you did not build.11The houses will be full of good things which you did not put in them, and there will be wells that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant. When the Lord brings you into this land and you have all you want to eat,12make certain that you do not forget the Lord who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves.13 Honor the Lord your God, worship only him, and make your promises in his name alone.14Do not worship other gods, any of the gods of the peoples around you.15If you do worship other gods, the Lord's anger will come against you like fire and will destroy you completely, because the Lord your God, who is present with you, tolerates no rivals.
16 “Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you did at Massah.17Be sure that you obey all the laws that he has given you.18Do what the Lord says is right and good, and all will go well with you. You will be able to take possession of the fertile land that the Lord promised your ancestors,19and you will drive out your enemies, as he promised.
20“In times to come your children will ask you, ‘Why did the Lord our God command us to obey all these laws?’21Then tell them, ‘We were slaves of the king of Egypt, and the Lord rescued us by his great power.22With our own eyes we saw him work miracles and do terrifying things to the Egyptians and to their king and to all his officials.23He freed us from Egypt to bring us here and give us this land, as he had promised our ancestors he would.24Then the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these laws and to honor him. If we do, he will always watch over our nation and keep it prosperous.25If we faithfully obey everything that God has commanded us, he will be pleased with us.’
REFLECT:
What does Moses tell the people to do? Why are they told to write and discuss the laws over and over again? How might this kind of discipline impact their understanding and practice of the law? How might this discipline be helpful in your daily life?

The People's Fear
(Exodus 20.18-21)
23“When the whole mountain was on fire and you heard the voice from the darkness, your leaders and the chiefs of your tribes came to me24and said, ‘The Lord our God showed us his greatness and his glory when we heard him speak from the fire! Today we have seen that it is possible for people to continue to live, even though God has spoken to them.25But why should we risk death again? That terrible fire will destroy us. We are sure to die if we hear the Lord our God speak again.26Has any human being ever lived after hearing the living God speak from a fire?27Go back, Moses, and listen to everything that the Lord our God says. Then return and tell us what he said to you. We will listen and obey.’
28“When the Lord heard this, he said to me, ‘I have heard what these people said, and they are right.29If only they would always feel this way! If only they would always honor me and obey all my commands, so that everything would go well with them and their descendants forever.30Go and tell them to return to their tents.31But you, Moses, stay here with me, and I will give you all my laws and commands. Teach them to the people, so that they will obey them in the land that I am giving them.’
32“People of Israel, be sure that you do everything that the Lord your God has commanded you. Do not disobey any of his laws.33Obey them all, so that everything will go well with you and so that you will continue to live in the land that you are going to occupy.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 5:22 A,

[Moses said:] “These are the commandments the LORD gave to all of you when you were gathered at the mountain.”
TODAY'S READING:
The Ten Commandments
(Exodus 20.1-17)
1Moses called together all the people of Israel and said to them, “People of Israel, listen to all the laws that I am giving you today. Learn them and be sure that you obey them.2At Mount Sinai the Lord our God made a covenant,3not only with our fathers, but with all of us who are living today.4There on the mountain the Lord spoke to you face-to-face from the fire.5I stood between you and the Lord at that time to tell you what he said, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.
“The Lord said,6‘I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves.
7“‘Worship no god but me.
8 “‘Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the water under the earth.9 Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, for I am the Lord your God and I tolerate no rivals. I bring punishment on those who hate me and on their descendants down to the third and fourth generation.10But I show my love to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my laws.
11 “‘Do not use my name for evil purposes, for I, the Lord your God, will punish anyone who misuses my name.
12 “‘Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy, as I, the Lord your God, have commanded you.13 You have six days in which to do your work,14but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to me. On that day no one is to work—neither you, your children, your slaves, your animals, nor the foreigners who live in your country. Your slaves must rest just as you do.15Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and that I, the Lord your God, rescued you by my great power and strength. That is why I command you to observe the Sabbath.
16 “‘Respect your father and your mother, as I, the Lord your God, command you, so that all may go well with you and so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you.
17 “‘Do not commit murder.
18 “‘Do not commit adultery.
19 “‘Do not steal.
20 “‘Do not accuse anyone falsely.
21 “‘Do not desire another man's wife; do not desire his house, his land, his slaves, his cattle, his donkeys, or anything else that he owns.’
22 “These are the commandments the Lord gave to all of you when you were gathered at the mountain. When he spoke with a mighty voice from the fire and from the thick clouds, he gave these commandments and no others. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
REFLECT:

Moses gave God’s laws and teachings to the people of Israel.
TODAY'S READING:
The Cities of Refuge East of the Jordan
41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan River42to which a man could escape and be safe if he had accidentally killed someone who had not been his enemy. He could escape to one of these cities and not be put to death.43For the tribe of Reuben there was the city of Bezer, on the desert plateau; for the tribe of Gad there was Ramoth, in the territory of Gilead; and for the tribe of Manasseh there was Golan, in the territory of Bashan.
Introduction to the Giving of God's Law
44Moses gave God's laws and teachings to the people of Israel.45-46It was after they had come out of Egypt and were in the valley east of the Jordan River, opposite the town of Bethpeor, that he gave them these laws. This was in the territory that had belonged to King Sihon of the Amorites, who had ruled in the town of Heshbon. Moses and the people of Israel defeated him when they came out of Egypt.47They occupied his land and the land of King Og of Bashan, the other Amorite king who lived east of the Jordan.48This land extended from the town of Aroer, on the edge of the Arnon River, all the way north to Mount Sirion, that is, Mount Hermon.49It also included all the region east of the Jordan River as far south as the Dead Sea and east to the foot of Mount Pisgah.

How do you get the kind of grace to keep going in spite of temptations, trials, tension, tiredness, and troubles? You do four things:

1. Cry out for God's help.
2. Fill your mind with God's Word.
3. Accept support from God's people.
4. Hold on to God's promises.

[Moses said:] “So remember today and never forget: the LORD is God in heaven and on earth. There is no other god.”

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 4:39
[Moses said:] “So remember today and never forget: the LORD is God in heaven and on earth. There is no other god.”
TODAY'S READING:
Warning against Idolatry
15“When the Lord spoke to you from the fire on Mount Sinai, you did not see any form. For your own good, then, make certain16 that you do not sin by making for yourselves an idol in any form at all—whether man or woman,17 animal or bird,18reptile or fish.19Do not be tempted to worship and serve what you see in the sky—the sun, the moon, and the stars. The Lord your God has given these to all other peoples for them to worship.20 But you are the people he rescued from Egypt, that blazing furnace. He brought you out to make you his own people, as you are today.21 Because of you the Lord your God was angry with me and solemnly declared that I would not cross the Jordan River to enter the fertile land which he is giving you.22I will die in this land and never cross the river, but you are about to go across and occupy that fertile land.23Be certain that you do not forget the covenant that the Lord your God made with you. Obey his command not to make yourselves any kind of idol,24 because the Lord your God is like a flaming fire; he tolerates no rivals.
25“Even when you have been in the land a long time and have children and grandchildren, do not sin by making for yourselves an idol in any form at all. This is evil in the Lord's sight, and it will make him angry.26I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that, if you disobey me, you will soon disappear from the land. You will not live very long in the land across the Jordan that you are about to occupy. You will be completely destroyed.27 The Lord will scatter you among other nations, where only a few of you will survive.28There you will serve gods made by human hands, gods of wood and stone, gods that cannot see or hear, eat or smell.29 There you will look for the Lord your God, and if you search for him with all your heart, you will find him.30When you are in trouble and all those things happen to you, then you will finally turn to the Lord and obey him.31He is a merciful God. He will not abandon you or destroy you, and he will not forget the covenant that he himself made with your ancestors.
32“Search the past, the time before you were born, all the way back to the time when God created human beings on the earth. Search the entire earth. Has anything as great as this ever happened before? Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?33Have any people ever lived after hearing a god speak to them from a fire, as you have?34Has any god ever dared to go and take a people from another nation and make them his own, as the Lord your God did for you in Egypt? Before your very eyes he used his great power and strength; he brought plagues and war, worked miracles and wonders, and caused terrifying things to happen.35 The Lord has shown you this, to prove to you that he alone is God and that there is no other.36He let you hear his voice from heaven so that he could instruct you; and here on earth he let you see his holy fire, and he spoke to you from it.37Because he loved your ancestors, he chose you, and by his great power he himself brought you out of Egypt.38As you advanced, he drove out nations greater and more powerful than you, so that he might bring you in and give you their land, the land which still belongs to you.39So remember today and never forget: the Lord is God in heaven and on earth. There is no other god.40Obey all his laws that I have given you today, and all will go well with you and your descendants. You will continue to live in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to be yours forever.”
REFLECT:
Israel’s LORD God was a living God, and no image or idol could be made that could represent God. What warnings did Moses give the people concerning idol worship? Reread verses 29-31. What do these verses teach you about God? In what ways have you experienced God’s mercy?
#PRAY
Merciful and loving God, may I never forget that you alone are the Lord God. You rule in heaven and on earth. I worship you and praise your holy name. Amen.

[Moses said:] “No other nation, no matter how great, has a god who is so near when they need him as the LORD our God is to us. He answers us whenever we call for help.”

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 4:7
[Moses said:] “No other nation, no matter how great, has a god who is so near when they need him as the LORD our God is to us. He answers us whenever we call for help.”
TODAY'S READING:
Moses Urges Israel to Be Obedient
1Then Moses said to the people, “Obey all the laws that I am teaching you, and you will live and occupy the land which the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you.2 Do not add anything to what I command you, and do not take anything away. Obey the commands of the Lord your God that I have given you.3 You yourselves saw what the Lord did at Mount Peor. He destroyed everyone who worshiped Baal there,4but those of you who were faithful to the Lord your God are still alive today.
5“I have taught you all the laws, as the Lord my God told me to do. Obey them in the land that you are about to invade and occupy.6Obey them faithfully, and this will show the people of other nations how wise you are. When they hear of all these laws, they will say, ‘What wisdom and understanding this great nation has!’
7“No other nation, no matter how great, has a god who is so near when they need him as the Lord our God is to us. He answers us whenever we call for help.8No other nation, no matter how great, has laws so just as those that I have taught you today.9Be on your guard! Make certain that you do not forget, as long as you live, what you have seen with your own eyes. Tell your children and your grandchildren10about the day you stood in the presence of the Lord your God at Mount Sinai, when he said to me, ‘Assemble the people. I want them to hear what I have to say, so that they will learn to obey me as long as they live and so that they will teach their children to do the same.’
11 “Tell your children how you went and stood at the foot of the mountain which was covered with thick clouds of dark smoke and fire blazing up to the sky.12Tell them how the Lord spoke to you from the fire, how you heard him speaking but did not see him in any form at all.13 He told you what you must do to keep the covenant he made with you—you must obey the Ten Commandments, which he wrote on two stone tablets.14 The Lord told me to teach you all the laws that you are to obey in the land that you are about to invade and occupy.
REFLECT:
What must the people of Israel do in order to occupy the land God promised to give them (verse 1)? Reread verses 3 and 4. What does Moses exhort the people to remember? What does Moses instruct the people to tell their children? How is the faith passed on to succeeding generations within your community of faith?
#PRAY
Almighty God, you hear us when we call to you for help and you are always near. Help me to remember your commandments and teach them to others so that everyone will know of your steadfast love and faithfulness and grow in the knowledge of you. Amen.

4 characteristics to biblical forgiveness:

1. Forgiveness is remembering how much you have been forgiven.
2. Forgiveness is relinquishing your right to get even.
3. Forgiveness is responding to evil with good.
4. Forgiveness is repeating the process as long as necessary.

[Moses said:] “May the LORD, the God of your ancestors, make you increase a thousand times more and make you prosperous, as he promised!"

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: DEUTERONOMY 1:11
[Moses said:] “May the LORD, the God of your ancestors, make you increase a thousand times more and make you prosperous, as he promised!”
TODAY'S READING:
Introduction
1In this book are the words that Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they were in the wilderness east of the Jordan River. They were in the Jordan Valley near Suph, between the town of Paran on one side and the towns of Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab on the other. (2It takes eleven days to travel from Mount Sinai to Kadesh Barnea by way of the hill country of Edom.)3On the first day of the eleventh month of the fortieth year after they had left Egypt, Moses told the people everything the Lord had commanded him to tell them.4 This was after the Lord had defeated King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled in the town of Heshbon, and King Og of Bashan, who ruled in the towns of Ashtaroth and Edrei.5It was while the people were east of the Jordan in the territory of Moab that Moses began to explain God's laws and teachings.
He said,6“When we were at Mount Sinai, the Lord our God said to us, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.7Break camp and move on. Go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all the surrounding regions—to the Jordan Valley, to the hill country and the lowlands, to the southern region, and to the Mediterranean coast. Go to the land of Canaan and on beyond the Lebanon Mountains as far as the great Euphrates River.8All of this is the land which I, the Lord, promised to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to their descendants. Go and occupy it.’”
Moses Appoints Judges
(Exodus 18.13-27)
9Moses said to the people, “While we were still at Mount Sinai, I told you, ‘The responsibility for leading you is too much for me. I can't do it alone.10The Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.11May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, make you increase a thousand times more and make you prosperous, as he promised!12But how can I alone bear the heavy responsibility for settling your disputes?13Choose some wise, understanding, and experienced men from each tribe, and I will put them in charge of you.’14And you agreed that this was a good thing to do.15So I took the wise and experienced leaders you chose from your tribes, and I placed them in charge of you. Some were responsible for a thousand people, some for a hundred, some for fifty, and some for ten. I also appointed other officials throughout the tribes.
16“At that time I instructed them, ‘Listen to the disputes that come up among your people. Judge every dispute fairly, whether it concerns only your own people or involves foreigners who live among you.17Show no partiality in your decisions; judge everyone on the same basis, no matter who they are. Do not be afraid of anyone, for the decisions you make come from God. If any case is too difficult for you, bring it to me, and I will decide it.’18At the same time I gave you instructions for everything else you were to do.
REFLECT:
In today’s reading, Moses recounts the appointment of judges to help bear the responsibility of leadership (verses 9-18). What instructions did Moses give to those appointed as judges (verses 16-18)? How are disputes resolved within your community of faith?
#PRAY
God of promise, teach me to follow your commands and guide me this day. Help me to grow in wisdom and understanding as I seek to serve and honor you. Amen.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: NUMBERS 29:12B

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: NUMBERS 29:12B
Celebrate this festival in honor of the LORD for seven days and do no work.
TODAY'S READING:
The Offerings at the Festival of Shelters
(Leviticus 23.33-44)
12 Gather for worship on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. Celebrate this festival in honor of the Lord for seven days and do no work.13On this first day offer a food offering to the Lord, an odor pleasing to him: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.14Offer the proper grain offering of flour mixed with olive oil: 6 pounds of flour with each bull, 4 pounds with each ram,15and 2 pounds with each lamb, with the required wine offerings.16Also offer one male goat as a sin offering. Offer these in addition to the daily burnt offering with its grain offering and wine offering.
17On the second day offer twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.18-19Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
20On the third day offer eleven young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.21-22Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
23On the fourth day offer ten young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.24-25Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
26On the fifth day offer nine young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.27-28Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
29On the sixth day offer eight young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.30-31Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
32On the seventh day offer seven young bulls, two rams, and fourteen one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.33-34Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
35On the eighth day gather for worship and do no work.36Offer a burnt offering as a food offering to the Lord, an odor pleasing to him: one young bull, one ram, and seven one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.37-38Offer with them all the other offerings required for the first day.
39These are the regulations concerning the burnt offerings, grain offerings, wine offerings, and fellowship offerings that you are to make to the Lord at your appointed festivals. These are in addition to the offerings you give in fulfillment of a vow or as freewill offerings.
40So Moses told the people of Israel everything that the Lord had commanded him.
REFLECT:
Today’s reading describes the offerings that were to be made on each of the seven days of the festival. What were these offerings? Based on the readings from the book of Numbers these past four days, how important were these offerings to the Israelites in daily life, worship, and special festivals? How important in daily life are offerings, worship, and religious ceremonies today?
#PRAY
Lord God, daily will I praise you and thank you for your everlasting love, mercy, and care. Order my steps this day, and may my life be a living sacrifice of service to you. Amen.

On the first day of the festival you are to gather for worship, and no work is to be done.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: NUMBERS 28:18
On the first day of the festival you are to gather for worship, and no work is to be done.
TODAY'S READING:
The Offerings at the Festival of Unleavened Bread
(Leviticus 23.5-14)
16 The Passover Festival in honor of the Lord is to be held on the fourteenth day of the first month.17 On the fifteenth day a religious festival begins which lasts seven days, during which only bread prepared without yeast is to be eaten.18On the first day of the festival you are to gather for worship, and no work is to be done.19Offer a burnt offering as a food offering to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, and seven one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.20Offer the proper grain offering of flour mixed with olive oil: 6 pounds with each bull, 4 pounds with the ram,21and 2 pounds with each lamb.22Also offer one male goat as a sin offering, and in this way perform the ritual of purification for the people.23Offer these in addition to the regular morning burnt offering.24In the same way, for seven days offer to the Lord a food offering, an odor pleasing to him. Offer this in addition to the daily burnt offering and wine offering.25Meet for worship on the seventh day and do no work.
The Offerings at the Harvest Festival
(Leviticus 23.15-22)
26 On the first day of the Harvest Festival, when you present the offering of new grain to the Lord, you are to gather for worship, and no work is to be done.27Offer a burnt offering as an odor pleasing to the Lord: two young bulls, one ram, and seven one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.28Offer the proper grain offering of flour mixed with olive oil: 6 pounds with each bull, 4 pounds with the ram,29and 2 pounds with each lamb.30Also offer one male goat as a sin offering, and in this way perform the ritual of purification for the people.31Offer these and the wine offering in addition to the daily burnt offering and grain offering.
REFLECT:
What regulations were the people to follow for celebrating the Festival of Unleavened Bread? What offerings were to be made for celebrating the Harvest Festival? On both occasions, why was it important for the people to gather for worship? In the life of your community of faith, are there commemorations that are celebrated with special offerings?

These burnt offerings are food offerings, an odor pleasing to the LORD.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: NUMBERS 28:13B
TODAY'S READING:
The Regular Offerings
(Exodus 29.38-46)
1The Lord commanded Moses2to instruct the Israelites to present to God at the appointed times the required food offerings that are pleasing to him.
3These are the food offerings that are to be presented to the Lord: for the daily burnt offering, two one-year-old male lambs without any defects.4Offer the first lamb in the morning, and the second in the evening,5each with a grain offering of 2 pounds of flour, mixed with 2 pints of the best olive oil.6This is the daily offering that is completely burned, which was first offered at Mount Sinai as a food offering, an odor pleasing to the Lord.7As the wine offering with the first lamb, pour out at the altar 2 pints of wine.8In the evening offer the second lamb in the same way as the morning offering, together with its wine offering. It also is a food offering, an odor pleasing to the Lord.
The Sabbath Offering
9On the Sabbath day offer two one-year-old male lambs without any defects, 4 pounds of flour mixed with olive oil as a grain offering, and the wine offering.10This burnt offering is to be offered every Sabbath in addition to the daily offering with its wine offering.
The Offering on the First Day of the Month
11Present a burnt offering to the Lord at the beginning of each month: two young bulls, one ram, seven one-year-old male lambs, all without any defects.12As a grain offering, offer flour mixed with olive oil: with each bull, 6 pounds of flour; with the ram, 4 pounds;13and with each lamb, 2 pounds. These burnt offerings are food offerings, an odor pleasing to the Lord.14The proper wine offering is 4 pints of wine with each bull, 3 pints with the ram, and 2 pints with each lamb. This is the regulation for the burnt offering for the first day of each month throughout the year.15And in addition to the daily burnt offering with its wine offering, offer one male goat as a sin offering.
REFLECT:
Today’s reading describes offerings or sacrifices that are to be made daily, on the Sabbath, and on the first day of the month. What food offerings are described as being pleasing to God? What types of offerings are made within your community of faith?
#PRAY
Holy God, may all I do and say this day serve as an offering to you and be pleasing in your sight. I praise and glorify your holy name. Amen.

One tenth of all the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the LORD.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: LEVITICUS 27:30
One tenth of all the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the LORD.
TODAY'S READING:
16If any of you dedicate part of your land to the Lord, the price shall be set according to the amount of seed it takes to sow it, at the rate of ten pieces of silver per bushel of barley.17If you dedicate the land immediately after a Year of Restoration, the full price applies.18If you dedicate it any time later, the priest shall estimate the cash value according to the number of years left until the next Year of Restoration, and set a reduced price.19If you wish to buy your field back, you must pay the price plus an additional 20 percent.20If you sell the field to someone else without first buying it back from the Lord, you lose the right to buy it back.21At the next Year of Restoration the field will become the Lord's permanent property; it shall belong to the priests.
22If you dedicate to the Lord a field that you have bought,23the priest shall estimate its value according to the number of years until the next Year of Restoration, and you must pay the price that very day; the money belongs to the Lord.24At the Year of Restoration the field shall be returned to the original owner or to the descendants.
25All prices shall be set according to the official standard.
26The first-born of an animal already belongs to the Lord, so no one may dedicate it to him as a freewill offering. A calf, a lamb, or a kid belongs to the Lord,27but the first-born of an unclean animal may be bought back at the standard price plus an additional 20 percent. If it is not bought back, it may be sold to someone else at the standard price.
28 None of you may sell or buy back what you have unconditionally dedicated to the Lord, whether it is a human being, an animal, or land. It belongs permanently to the Lord.29Not even human beings who have been unconditionally dedicated may be bought back; they must be put to death.
30 One tenth of all the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the Lord.31If you wish to buy any of it back, you must pay the standard price plus an additional 20 percent.32One of every ten domestic animals belongs to the Lord. When the animals are counted, every tenth one belongs to the Lord.33You may not arrange the animals so that the poor animals are chosen, and you may not make any substitutions. If you do substitute one animal for another, then both animals will belong to the Lord and may not be bought back.
34These are the commands that the Lord gave Moses on Mount Sinai for the people of Israel.
REFLECT:
Much of what is described in the book of Leviticus, such as what is found in chapter 27, is not part of modern-day life. The law described in verses 28 and 29 indicates that something dedicated completely to the LORD could not be used by anyone else and had to be destroyed. This law most often applied to towns and people captured in war (see Numbers 21:1-3; Joshua 6:16, 17). Ten percent, as cited in verse 30, traditionally known as a tithe, refers to the tenth that is holy or dedicated to the LORD’s sacred place of worship. In what ways does your community dedicate offerings to the LORD? What stood out for you in today’s reading?

Isaiah 43:11-12

I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.

…every gift made to the LORD is sacred.

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: LEVITICUS 27:9B
TODAY'S READING:
Laws concerning Gifts to the Lord
1The Lord gave Moses2the following regulations for the people of Israel. When any of you have been given to the Lord in fulfillment of a special vow, you may be set free by the payment of the following sums of money,3-7according to the official standard:
–adult male, twenty to sixty years old: 50 pieces of silver
–adult female: 30 pieces of silver
–young male, five to twenty years old: 20 pieces of silver
–young female: 10 pieces of silver
–infant male under five: 5 pieces of silver
–infant female: 3 pieces of silver
–male above sixty years of age: 15 pieces of silver
–female above sixty: 10 pieces of silver
8If any of you make a vow and are too poor to pay the standard price, you shall bring the person to the priest, and the priest will set a lower price, according to your ability to pay.
9If your vow concerns an animal that is acceptable as an offering to the Lord, then every gift made to the Lord is sacred,10and you may not substitute another animal for it. If you do, both animals belong to the Lord.11But if your vow concerns a ritually unclean animal, which is not acceptable as an offering to the Lord, you shall take the animal to the priest.12The priest shall set a price for it, according to its good or bad qualities, and the price will be final.13If you wish to buy it back, you must pay the price plus an additional 20 percent.
14When any of you dedicate your house to the Lord, the priest shall set the price according to its good or bad points, and the price will be final.15If you wish to buy your house back, you must pay the price plus an additional 20 percent.
REFLECT:
Verses 2-7 refer to people who had been dedicated to the LORD by a promise or a vow. To free someone from this service meant overriding the vow with a payment of money. The standard payments were probably based on how much work an individual would be able to do. A strong mature male, for example, would normally be able to do more work that required physical strength. What were your thoughts as you read these verses? In what ways are monetary values placed on the work people do today?

Lord God, every good gift comes from you and is sacred. Bless the labor of my hands today and may it serve as an offering to you. Amen.

Psalm 63:1

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
Oh Dios, eres mi Dios;  pronto te buscaré: mi alma tiene sed de ti, mi carne te anhela en una tierra seca y sedienta, donde no hay agua;

The LORD said, “If you will not obey my commands, you will be punished.”

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: LEVITICUS 26:14
TODAY'S READING:
Punishment for Disobedience
(Deuteronomy 28.15-68)
14 The Lord said, “If you will not obey my commands, you will be punished.15If you refuse to obey my laws and commands and break the covenant I have made with you,16I will punish you. I will bring disaster on you—incurable diseases and fevers that will make you blind and cause your life to waste away. You will plant your crops, but it will do you no good, because your enemies will conquer you and eat what you have grown.17I will turn against you, so that you will be defeated, and those who hate you will rule over you; you will be so terrified that you will run when no one is chasing you.
18“If even after all of this you still do not obey me, I will increase your punishment seven times.19I will break your stubborn pride; there will be no rain, and your land will be dry and as hard as iron.20All your hard work will do you no good, because your land will not produce crops and the trees will not bear fruit.
21“If you still continue to resist me and refuse to obey me, I will again increase your punishment seven times.22I will send dangerous animals among you, and they will kill your children, destroy your livestock, and leave so few of you that your roads will be deserted.
23“If after all of this punishment you still do not listen to me, but continue to defy me,24then I will turn on you and punish you seven times harder than before.25I will bring war on you to punish you for breaking our covenant, and if you gather in your cities for safety, I will send incurable diseases among you, and you will be forced to surrender to your enemies.26I will cut off your food supply, so that ten women will need only one oven to bake all the bread they have. They will ration it out, and when you have eaten it all, you will still be hungry.
27“If after all of this you still continue to defy me and refuse to obey me,28then in my anger I will turn on you and again make your punishment seven times worse than before.29Your hunger will be so great that you will eat your own children.30I will destroy your places of worship on the hills, tear down your incense altars, and throw your dead bodies on your fallen idols. In utter disgust31I will turn your cities into ruins, destroy your places of worship, and refuse to accept your sacrifices.32I will destroy your land so completely that the enemies who occupy it will be shocked at the destruction.33I will bring war on you and scatter you in foreign lands. Your land will be deserted, and your cities left in ruins.34-35Then the land will enjoy the years of complete rest that you would not give it; it will lie abandoned and get its rest while you are in exile in the land of your enemies.
36“I will make those of you who are in exile so terrified that the sound of a leaf blowing in the wind will make you run. You will run as if you were being pursued in battle, and you will fall when there is no enemy near you.37You will stumble over one another when no one is chasing you, and you will be unable to fight against any enemy.38You will die in exile, swallowed up by the land of your enemies.39The few of you who survive in the land of your enemies will waste away because of your own sin and the sin of your ancestors.
40“But your descendants will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors, who resisted me and rebelled against me,41and caused me to turn against them and send them into exile in the land of their enemies. At last, when your descendants are humbled and they have paid the penalty for their sin and rebellion,42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob and with Isaac and with Abraham, and I will renew my promise to give my people the land.43First, however, the land must be rid of its people, so that it can enjoy its complete rest, and they must pay the full penalty for having rejected my laws and my commands.44But even then, when they are still in the land of their enemies, I will not completely abandon them or destroy them. That would put an end to my covenant with them, and I am the Lord their God.45I will renew the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I showed all the nations my power by bringing my people out of Egypt, in order that I, the Lord, might be their God.”
46All these are the laws and commands that the Lord gave to Moses on Mount Sinai for the people of Israel.

What punishments are cited in today’s reading? What were your thoughts as you read these verses? Reread verses 40-45. What does God promise? What will bring about God’s remembering his covenant (verses 41b-43)?

Lord God, when I sin and fail to obey your commands, humble my heart as I seek your forgiveness. Teach me to remember your covenant, renew my spirit, and restore me to a right relationship with you. Amen.
