TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:171
TODAY'S READING:
Dedication to the Law of the Lord
161Powerful people attack me unjustly,
but I respect your law.
162How happy I am because of your promises—
as happy as someone who finds rich treasure.
163I hate and detest all lies,
but I love your law.
164Seven times each day I thank you
for your righteous judgments.
165Those who love your law have perfect security,
and there is nothing that can make them fall.
166I wait for you to save me, Lord,
and I do what you command.
167I obey your teachings;
I love them with all my heart.
168I obey your commands and your instructions;
you see everything I do.
A Prayer for Help
169Let my cry for help reach you, Lord!
Give me understanding, as you have promised.
170Listen to my prayer,
and save me according to your promise!
171I will always praise you,
because you teach me your laws.
172I will sing about your law,
because your commands are just.
173Always be ready to help me,
because I follow your commands.
174How I long for your saving help, O Lord!
I find happiness in your law.
175Give me life, so that I may praise you;
may your instructions help me.
176I wander about like a lost sheep;
so come and look for me, your servant,
because I have not neglected your laws.
REFLECT:
You have spent the past ten days reading Psalm 119. Go back and briefly review the psalm as a whole. What themes do you see repeated throughout the psalm? What different emotions are revealed through the psalm? How does this psalm speak to different aspects of your faith?
#PRAY
With all my heart, Lord, I love your teachings. How happy I am because of your promises. Hear my prayer, and give me the understanding that comes from your Law and from studying and meditating on your Word. Keep me close to you and grounded in your teachings. Amen.

I will always praise you, because you teach me your laws.
Philippians 1:9-10
Y esto ruego, para que tu amor abunde aún más y más en conocimiento y en todo juicio; para que aprueben cosas que son excelentes; para que seáis sinceros y sin ofensa hasta el día de Cristo;
And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; that ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

You are near to me, LORD, and all your commands are permanent.
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:151
TODAY'S READING:
A Prayer for Deliverance
145With all my heart I call to you;
answer me, Lord, and I will obey your commands!
146I call to you;
save me, and I will keep your laws.
147Before sunrise I call to you for help;
I place my hope in your promise.
148All night long I lie awake,
to meditate on your instructions.
149Because your love is constant, hear me, O Lord;
show your mercy, and preserve my life!
150My cruel persecutors are coming closer,
people who never keep your law.
151But you are near to me, Lord,
and all your commands are permanent.
152Long ago I learned about your instructions;
you made them to last forever.
A Plea for Help
153Look at my suffering, and save me,
because I have not neglected your law.
154Defend my cause, and set me free;
save me, as you have promised.
155The wicked will not be saved,
for they do not obey your laws.
156But your compassion, Lord, is great;
show your mercy and save me!
157I have many enemies and oppressors,
but I do not fail to obey your laws.
158When I look at those traitors, I am filled with disgust,
because they do not keep your commands.
159See how I love your instructions, Lord.
Your love never changes, so save me!
160The heart of your law is truth,
and all your righteous judgments are eternal.
REFLECT:

John 3:20-21
Porque todo aquel que hace lo malo, odia la luz, ni sale a la luz, para que sus obras no sean reprendidas. Pero el que hace la verdad viene a la luz, para que sus obras se manifiesten, para que sean forjadas en Dios.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

You are righteous, LORD, and your laws are just.
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:137
TODAY'S READING:
129Your teachings are wonderful;
I obey them with all my heart.
130The explanation of your teachings gives light
and brings wisdom to the ignorant.
131In my desire for your commands
I pant with open mouth.
132Turn to me and have mercy on me
as you do on all those who love you.
133As you have promised, keep me from falling;
don't let me be overcome by evil.
134Save me from those who oppress me,
so that I may obey your commands.
135Bless me with your presence
and teach me your laws.
136My tears pour down like a river,
because people do not obey your law.
The Justice of the Law of the Lord
137You are righteous, Lord,
and your laws are just.
138The rules that you have given
are completely fair and right.
139My anger burns in me like a fire,
because my enemies disregard your commands.
140How certain your promise is!
How I love it!
141I am unimportant and despised,
but I do not neglect your teachings.
142Your righteousness will last forever,
and your law is always true.
143I am filled with trouble and anxiety,
but your commandments bring me joy.
144Your instructions are always just;
give me understanding, and I shall live.
REFLECT:
In verse 134, the psalmist asks God to protect him from oppression. In this case, such oppression results from injustice borne out of failure to do God’s will. How can experiencing injustice firsthand or witnessing it in the world impact your faith?
#PRAY:
Righteous God, I honestly want to know everything you teach. I trust in your goodness and mercy. Keep me close to you and don’t let me stumble, so I can obey your laws. Amen.

You are my defender and protector; I put my hope in your promise.
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:114
TODAY'S READING:
Safety in the Law of the Lord
113I hate those who are not completely loyal to you,
but I love your law.
114You are my defender and protector;
I put my hope in your promise.
115Go away from me, you sinful people.
I will obey the commands of my God.
116Give me strength, as you promised, and I shall live;
don't let me be disappointed in my hope!
117Hold me, and I will be safe,
and I will always pay attention to your commands.
118You reject everyone who disobeys your laws;
their deceitful schemes are useless.
119You treat all the wicked like rubbish,
and so I love your instructions.
120Because of you I am afraid;
I am filled with fear because of your judgments.
Obedience to the Law of the Lord
121I have done what is right and good;
don't abandon me to my enemies!
122Promise that you will help your servant;
don't let the arrogant oppress me!
123My eyes are tired from watching for your saving help,
for the deliverance you promised.
124Treat me according to your constant love,
and teach me your commands.
125I am your servant; give me understanding,
so that I may know your teachings.
126Lord, it is time for you to act,
because people are disobeying your law.
127I love your commands more than gold,
more than the finest gold.
128And so I follow all your instructions;
I hate all wrong ways.

3. Patience is a virtue.
4. Hard work always pays off.
5. Fail fast, fail early, fail often.
6. Stay away from toxic people.
7. Giving is better than receiving.
8. Don’t let others opinions hold you back.”
Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:105
TODAY'S READING:
Love for the Law of the Lord
97How I love your law!
I think about it all day long.
98Your commandment is with me all the time
and makes me wiser than my enemies.
99I understand more than all my teachers,
because I meditate on your instructions.
100I have greater wisdom than those who are old,
because I obey your commands.
101I have avoided all evil conduct,
because I want to obey your word.
102I have not neglected your instructions,
because you yourself are my teacher.
103How sweet is the taste of your instructions—
sweeter even than honey!
104I gain wisdom from your laws,
and so I hate all bad conduct.
Light from the Law of the Lord
105Your word is a lamp to guide me
and a light for my path.
106I will keep my solemn promise
to obey your just instructions.
107My sufferings, Lord, are terrible indeed;
keep me alive, as you have promised.
108Accept my prayer of thanks, O Lord,
and teach me your commands.
109I am always ready to risk my life;
I have not forgotten your law.
110The wicked lay a trap for me,
but I have not disobeyed your commands.
111Your commandments are my eternal possession;
they are the joy of my heart.
112I have decided to obey your laws
until the day I die.
REFLECT:
Jewish Scriptures (known to Christians as the Old Testament) reveal two important understandings of wisdom. First, true wisdom comes from God. Second, God’s wisdom is based on the Law that God gave to Moses and the people at Mount Sinai. The psalm writer says that he gains wisdom from God’s laws (verse 104). In what ways can God’s laws (instructions) provide you with wisdom?
#PRAY
Almighty God, let my wisdom and understanding grow through studying and experiencing your Word. May I be a careful, patient student of your teachings, that I may serve you with an obedient heart. Amen.
Hebrews 10:30-31
Porque conocemos al que ha dicho: La venganza me pertenece, yo pagaré, dice el Señor. Y nuevamente, el Señor juzgará a su pueblo. Es algo terrible caer en manos del Dios viviente.
For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Your word, O LORD, will last forever; it is eternal in heaven.
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:89
TODAY'S READING:
A Prayer for Deliverance
81I am worn out, Lord, waiting for you to save me;
I place my trust in your word.
82My eyes are tired from watching for what you promised,
while I ask, “When will you help me?”
83I am as useless as a discarded wineskin;
yet I have not forgotten your commands.
84How much longer must I wait?
When will you punish those who persecute me?
85The proud, who do not obey your law,
have dug pits to trap me.
86Your commandments are all trustworthy;
people persecute me with lies—help me!
87They have almost succeeded in killing me,
but I have not neglected your commands.
88Because of your constant love be good to me,
so that I may obey your laws.
Faith in the Law of the Lord
89Your word, O Lord, will last forever;
it is eternal in heaven.
90Your faithfulness endures through all the ages;
you have set the earth in place, and it remains.
91All things remain to this day because of your command,
because they are all your servants.
92If your law had not been the source of my joy,
I would have died from my sufferings.
93I will never neglect your instructions,
because by them you have kept me alive.
94I am yours—save me!
I have tried to obey your commands.
95The wicked are waiting to kill me,
but I will meditate on your laws.
96I have learned that everything has limits;
but your commandment is perfect.
REFLECT
Today’s reading reflects a tension between the psalmist’s trust in God’s promises and his desire for immediate relief from suffering. He is open with God about his struggles, expressing his frustration and begging for relief. How is it an act of faith to share this kind of frustration with God? Do you believe God hears and cares about your pain even if God doesn’t respond in the way you desire? Why or why not?
#PRAY
Lord, you are eternal! Your Word will last as long as the heavens. You remain faithful in every generation, and the earth you created will keep standing firm. Hear my cries for help, and ground me in your teachings so that I may stand firm in your promises. Amen.

You have kept your promise, LORD, and you are good to me, your servant.
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: PSALM 119:65
TODAY'S READING:
The Value of the Law of the Lord
65You have kept your promise, Lord,
and you are good to me, your servant.
66Give me wisdom and knowledge,
because I trust in your commands.
67Before you punished me, I used to go wrong,
but now I obey your word.
68How good you are—how kind!
Teach me your commands.
69The proud have told lies about me,
but with all my heart I obey your instructions.
70They have no understanding,
but I find pleasure in your law.
71My punishment was good for me,
because it made me learn your commands.
72The law that you gave means more to me
than all the money in the world.
The Justice of the Law of the Lord
73You created me, and you keep me safe;
give me understanding, so that I may learn your laws.
74Those who honor you will be glad when they see me,
because I trust in your promise.
75I know that your judgments are righteous, Lord,
and that you punished me because you are faithful.
76Let your constant love comfort me,
as you have promised me, your servant.
77Have mercy on me, and I will live
because I take pleasure in your law.
78May the proud be ashamed for falsely accusing me;
as for me, I will meditate on your instructions.
79May those who honor you come to me—
all those who know your commands.
80May I perfectly obey your commandments
and be spared the shame of defeat.
REFLECT
Today’s reading opens with the psalmist acknowledging God’s kindness as well as punishment from God. Why does the psalmist say that “punishment was good” (verse 71)? In what ways have you learned to be obedient to the Lord?
#PRAY

TODAY'S READING:
Confidence in the Law of the Lord
49Remember your promise to me, your servant;
it has given me hope.
50Even in my suffering I was comforted
because your promise gave me life.
51The proud are always scornful of me,
but I have not departed from your law.
52I remember your judgments of long ago,
and they bring me comfort, O Lord.
53When I see the wicked breaking your law,
I am filled with anger.
54During my brief earthly life
I compose songs about your commands.
55In the night I remember you, Lord,
and I think about your law.
56I find my happiness
in obeying your commands.
Devotion to the Law of the Lord
57You are all I want, O Lord;
I promise to obey your laws.
58I ask you with all my heart
to have mercy on me, as you have promised!
59I have considered my conduct,
and I promise to follow your instructions.
60Without delay I hurry
to obey your commands.
61The wicked have laid a trap for me,
but I do not forget your law.
62In the middle of the night I wake up
to praise you for your righteous judgments.
63I am a friend of all who serve you,
of all who obey your laws.
64Lord, the earth is full of your constant love;
teach me your commandments.

25I lie defeated in the dust;
revive me, as you have promised.
26I confessed all I have done, and you answered me;
teach me your ways.
27Help me to understand your laws,
and I will meditate on your wonderful teachings.
28I am overcome by sorrow;

29Keep me from going the wrong way,
and in your goodness teach me your law.
30I have chosen to be obedient;
I have paid attention to your judgments.
31I have followed your instructions, Lord;
don't let me be put to shame.
32I will eagerly obey your commands,
because you will give me more understanding.
A Prayer for Understanding
33Teach me, Lord, the meaning of your laws,
and I will obey them at all times.
34Explain your law to me, and I will obey it;
I will keep it with all my heart.
35Keep me obedient to your commandments,

36Give me the desire to obey your laws
rather than to get rich.
37Keep me from paying attention to what is worthless;
be good to me, as you have promised.
38Keep your promise to me, your servant—
the promise you make to those who obey you.
39Save me from the insults I fear;
how wonderful are your judgments!
40I want to obey your commands;
give me new life, for you are righteous.
Trusting the Law of the Lord
41Show me how much you love me, Lord,
and save me according to your promise.
42Then I can answer those who insult me
because I trust in your word.
43Enable me to speak the truth at all times,
because my hope is in your judgments.
44I will always obey your law,
for ever & ever.
45I will live in perfect freedom,
because I try to obey your teachings.
46I will announce your commands to kings
and I will not be ashamed.
47I find pleasure in obeying your commands,
because I love them.
48I respect and love your commandments;
I will meditate on your instructions.
REFLECT:
Reread verses 25-29. For what does the psalmist pray? What does the psalmist promise (verses 30-32)? In what ways do you seek to understand God’s teachings? God gave the Law to Moses shortly after God had set the people free from slavery in Egypt. The Law was intended to help people remain free by worshiping the Lord and living right, including treating one another with justice. The psalmist realizes that perfect freedom comes by obeying God’s teachings (verse 45). Do you feel that obeying God’s teachings provides freedom for you? Why or why not?
#Pray
God of life and freedom, let your teachings breathe new life into me that I may experience your perfect freedom by learning to live according to your will with justice, mercy, and compassion. Amen.

TODAY'S READING:
The Law of the Lord
1Happy are those whose lives are faultless,
who live according to the law of the Lord.
2Happy are those who follow his commands,
who obey him with all their heart.
3They never do wrong;
they walk in the Lord's ways.
4Lord, you have given us your laws
and told us to obey them faithfully.
5How I hope that I shall be faithful
in keeping your instructions!
6If I pay attention to all your commands,
then I will not be put to shame.
7As I learn your righteous judgments,
I will praise you with a pure heart.
8I will obey your laws;
never abandon me!
Obedience to the Law of the Lord
9How can young people keep their lives pure?
By obeying your commands.
10With all my heart I try to serve you;
keep me from disobeying your commandments.
11I keep your law in my heart,
so that I will not sin against you.
12I praise you, O Lord;
teach me your ways.
13I will repeat aloud
all the laws you have given.
14I delight in following your commands
more than in having great wealth.
15I study your instructions;
I examine your teachings.
16I take pleasure in your laws;
your commands I will not forget.
Happiness in the Law of the Lord
17Be good to me, your servant,
so that I may live and obey your teachings.
18Open my eyes, so that I may see
the wonderful truths in your law.
19I am here on earth for just a little while;
do not hide your commands from me.
20My heart aches with longing;
I want to know your judgments at all times.
21You reprimand the proud;
cursed are those who disobey your commands.
22Free me from their insults and scorn,
because I have kept your laws.
23The rulers meet and plot against me,
but I will study your teachings.
24Your instructions give me pleasure;
they are my advisers.
REFLECT:
Today’s passage reflects on the ways in which God’s law encourages the living of a “pure” life (verse 9). Here “pure” is an image for a life that is in keeping with God’s will. What does it mean to you to live a “pure” life and how does that apply to your spiritual life?
#PRAY:
Holy God, I worship you with all my heart. I eagerly seek to understand your teachings and obey your commands. Guide me this day to be obedient to your will. Amen.

The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect.
TODAY'S READING:
Warning to the Rich
1And now, you rich people, listen to me! Weep and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you!2 Your riches have rotted away, and your clothes have been eaten by moths.3 Your gold and silver are covered with rust, and this rust will be a witness against you and will eat up your flesh like fire. You have piled up riches in these last days.4 You have not paid any wages to those who work in your fields. Listen to their complaints! The cries of those who gather in your crops have reached the ears of God, the Lord Almighty.5Your life here on earth has been full of luxury and pleasure. You have made yourselves fat for the day of slaughter.6 You have condemned and murdered innocent people, and they do not resist you.
Patience and Prayer
7Be patient, then, my friends, until the Lord comes. See how patient farmers are as they wait for their land to produce precious crops. They wait patiently for the autumn and spring rains.8You also must be patient. Keep your hopes high, for the day of the Lord's coming is near.
9Do not complain against one another, my friends, so that God will not judge you. The Judge is near, ready to appear.10My friends, remember the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Take them as examples of patient endurance under suffering.11 We call them happy because they endured. You have heard of Job's patience, and you know how the Lord provided for him in the end. For the Lord is full of mercy and compassion.
12 Above all, my friends, do not use an oath when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Say only “Yes” when you mean yes, and “No” when you mean no, and then you will not come under God's judgment.
13Are any among you in trouble? They should pray. Are any among you happy? They should sing praises.14 Are any among you sick? They should send for the church elders, who will pray for them and rub olive oil on them in the name of the Lord.15This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; the Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have committed will be forgiven.16 So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect.17 Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years.18 Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops.
19My friends, if any of you wander away from the truth and another one brings you back again,20 remember this: whoever turns a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner's soul from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
REFLECT:
James is not warning against riches themselves, but rather against those whose love of riches causes them to turn away from God and act in ways that are not pleasing to God (see 1 Timothy 6:10). Does his warning have any implications for today? What does James say about how we are to act while waiting for the Lord to return? What does he say about prayer? Have you experienced the power of prayer? Reread verses 19-20. What is the importance of bringing back someone who has wandered away from the truth?
#Pray
God of wholeness and healing, help me to pray in all circumstances and to pray in accord with your will. Restore to your loving fold any who may have wandered away from your truth so that they once again may know and experience your love and grace. Amen.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
TODAY'S READING
Friendship with the World
1Where do all the fights and quarrels among you come from? They come from your desires for pleasure, which are constantly fighting within you.2You want things, but you cannot have them, so you are ready to kill; you strongly desire things, but you cannot get them, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have what you want because you do not ask God for it.3And when you ask, you do not receive it, because your motives are bad; you ask for things to use for your own pleasures.4Unfaithful people! Don't you know that to be the world's friend means to be God's enemy? If you want to be the world's friend, you make yourself God's enemy.5Don't think that there is no truth in the scripture that says, “The spirit that God placed in us is filled with fierce desires.”6 But the grace that God gives is even stronger. As the scripture says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
7So then, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you.8Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners! Purify your hearts, you hypocrites!9Be sorrowful, cry, and weep; change your laughter into crying, your joy into gloom!10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Warning against Judging One Another
11Do not criticize one another, my friends. If you criticize or judge another Christian, you criticize and judge the Law. If you judge the Law, then you are no longer one who obeys the Law, but one who judges it.12God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?
Warning against Boasting
13 Now listen to me, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.”14You don't even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears.15What you should say is this: “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.”16But now you are proud, and you boast; all such boasting is wrong.
17So then, if we do not do the good we know we should do, we are guilty of sin.
REFLECT
What does James say about asking for things and why what we might ask of God is not granted (verses 2, 3)? Have you ever experienced what you believed to be unanswered prayer? If so, what was the circumstance? How do you respond to the statement that sometimes God’s answer is “No”? What are your thoughts concerning James’s statement that “to be the world’s friend means to be God’s enemy” (verse 4)?
#Pray
Loving God, teach me to be humble, to put my trust in you, and to ask what is in accord with your will. Strengthen me to resist the devil and draw me near to you. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.

Words of thanksgiving and cursing pour out from the same mouth. My friends, this should not happen!
TODAY'S READING:
The Tongue
1My friends, not many of you should become teachers. As you know, we teachers will be judged with greater strictness than others.2 All of us often make mistakes. But if a person never makes a mistake in what he says, he is perfect and is also able to control his whole being.3We put a bit into the mouth of a horse to make it obey us, and we are able to make it go where we want.4Or think of a ship: big as it is and driven by such strong winds, it can be steered by a very small rudder, and it goes wherever the pilot wants it to go.5So it is with the tongue: small as it is, it can boast about great things.
Just think how large a forest can be set on fire by a tiny flame!6 And the tongue is like a fire. It is a world of wrong, occupying its place in our bodies and spreading evil through our whole being. It sets on fire the entire course of our existence with the fire that comes to it from hell itself.7We humans are able to tame and have tamed all other creatures—wild animals and birds, reptiles and fish.8But no one has ever been able to tame the tongue. It is evil and uncontrollable, full of deadly poison.9 We use it to give thanks to our Lord and Father and also to curse other people, who are created in the likeness of God.10Words of thanksgiving and cursing pour out from the same mouth. My friends, this should not happen!11No spring of water pours out sweet water and bitter water from the same opening.12A fig tree, my friends, cannot bear olives; a grapevine cannot bear figs, nor can a salty spring produce sweet water.
The Wisdom from Above
13 Are there any of you who are wise and understanding? You are to prove it by your good life, by your good deeds performed with humility and wisdom.14But if in your heart you are jealous, bitter, and selfish, don't sin against the truth by boasting of your wisdom.15Such wisdom does not come down from heaven; it belongs to the world, it is unspiritual and demonic.16Where there is jealousy and selfishness, there is also disorder and every kind of evil.17But the wisdom from above is pure first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle, and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deeds; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy.18And goodness is the harvest that is produced from the seeds the peacemakers plant in peace.
REFLECT:
What is your reaction to the way in which James describes the tongue? Is the tongue hard to control? How do you react when someone gossips about another? What is the effect of words that are spoken in love? Here are two sayings that echo James’s teachings: “Gossip is so tasty – how we love to swallow it” (Proverbs 18:8) and “Kind words are like honey – sweet to the taste and good for your health” (Proverbs 16:24). Read also what Jesus says about what comes out of our mouths (Matthew 15:10-20 or Mark 7:14-23). How does James describe worldly wisdom and wisdom from above (verses 13-18)?
#Pray
Lord God, guard my lips this day from uttering curses and anything that is displeasing to you. May I sing your praises and offer words of thanksgiving, and may I speak only words of love and encouragement to others. Teach me to seek after wisdom from above that is pure, peaceful and gentle. Amen.

8 Ways to declutter your mind
1. Accept what is
2. Be kind to yourself
3. Release your guilt and fears
4. Let go of control
5. Visualize what’s important to you.
6. Focus on your life-force energy
7. Allow yourself to be vulnerable
8. Find what doesn’t serve you and let it go.
"So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead."
TODAY'S READING:
Warning against Prejudice
1My friends, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, you must never treat people in different ways according to their outward appearance.2Suppose a rich man wearing a gold ring and fine clothes comes to your meeting, and a poor man in ragged clothes also comes.3If you show more respect to the well-dressed man and say to him, “Have this best seat here,” but say to the poor man, “Stand over there, or sit here on the floor by my feet,”4then you are guilty of creating distinctions among yourselves and of making judgments based on evil motives.
5Listen, my dear friends! God chose the poor people of this world to be rich in faith and to possess the kingdom which he promised to those who love him.6But you dishonor the poor! Who are the ones who oppress you and drag you before the judges? The rich!7They are the ones who speak evil of that good name which has been given to you.
8 You will be doing the right thing if you obey the law of the Kingdom, which is found in the scripture, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”9But if you treat people according to their outward appearance, you are guilty of sin, and the Law condemns you as a lawbreaker.10Whoever breaks one commandment is guilty of breaking them all.11 For the same one who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Even if you do not commit adultery, you have become a lawbreaker if you commit murder.12Speak and act as people who will be judged by the law that sets us free.13For God will not show mercy when he judges the person who has not been merciful; but mercy triumphs over judgment.
Faith and Actions
14My friends, what good is it for one of you to say that you have faith if your actions do not prove it? Can that faith save you?15Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don't have enough to eat.16What good is there in your saying to them, “God bless you! Keep warm and eat well!”—if you don't give them the necessities of life?17So it is with faith: if it is alone and includes no actions, then it is dead.
18But someone will say, “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.”19Do you believe that there is only one God? Good! The demons also believe—and tremble with fear.20You fool! Do you want to be shown that faith without actions is useless?21 How was our ancestor Abraham put right with God? It was through his actions, when he offered his son Isaac on the altar.22Can't you see? His faith and his actions worked together; his faith was made perfect through his actions.23 And the scripture came true that said, “Abraham believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous.” And so Abraham was called God's friend.24You see, then, that it is by our actions that we are put right with God, and not by our faith alone.
25 It was the same with the prostitute Rahab. She was put right with God through her actions, by welcoming the Israelite spies and helping them to escape by a different road.
26So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead.
Reflect:
Have you ever witnessed someone being mistreated because of their outward appearance or because they were poor? If so, what did you do? Why does James emphasize linking faith with actions? What did you learn from the examples of Abraham and Rahab? You can read their stories in the Old Testament in Genesis 15:1-6; 22:1-14, and Joshua 2:1-24; 6:22-25.
#Pray
Merciful God, help me to see others through your eyes of love and teach me not to pass judgment on others based on outward appearances. Strengthen my faith and embolden me to act in ways that will advance your Kingdom. Amen.

What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.
TODAY'S READING:
1 From James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ:
Greetings to all God's people scattered over the whole world.
Faith and Wisdom
2 My friends, consider yourselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come your way,3for you know that when your faith succeeds in facing such trials, the result is the ability to endure.4Make sure that your endurance carries you all the way without failing, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.5 But if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all.6But when you pray, you must believe and not doubt at all. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is driven and blown about by the wind.7-8If you are like that, unable to make up your mind and undecided in all you do, you must not think that you will receive anything from the Lord.
Poverty and Riches
9Those Christians who are poor must be glad when God lifts them up,10 and the rich Christians must be glad when God brings them down. For the rich will pass away like the flower of a wild plant.11The sun rises with its blazing heat and burns the plant; its flower falls off, and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way the rich will be destroyed while they go about their business.
Testing and Tempting
12Happy are those who remain faithful under trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those who love him.13 If we are tempted by such trials, we must not say, “This temptation comes from God.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.14But we are tempted when we are drawn away and trapped by our own evil desires.15Then our evil desires conceive and give birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
16Do not be deceived, my dear friends!17Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning.18By his own will he brought us into being through the word of truth, so that we should have first place among all his creatures.
Hearing and Doing
19 Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry.20Human anger does not achieve God's righteous purpose.21So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.
22Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice.23If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are.24They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like.25But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice—you will be blessed by God in what you do.
26Do any of you think you are religious? If you do not control your tongue, your religion is worthless and you deceive yourself.27What God the Father considers to be pure and genuine religion is this: to take care of orphans and widows in their suffering and to keep oneself from being corrupted by the world.
REFLECT:
Why does James tell his readers that they should consider themselves fortunate when all kinds of trials come their way (verse 2)? What trials have you faced in your life? How did you handle them? Do you find James’s advice comforting? Why or why not? Why does he encourage his readers to pray for wisdom (verse 5)? Do you find any of the advice James gives to be relevant for your life today?
#Pray
Sovereign God, teach me to seek wisdom from you. Guide my actions this day and keep me strong in faith when facing trials and temptations so that I am not corrupted by the world. Teach me to submit to you and accept the Word you are planting in my heart today. Amen.

Your faith, then, does not rest on human wisdom but on God’s power.
TODAY'S READING:
The Message about the Crucified Christ:
1When I came to you, my friends, to preach God's secret truth, I did not use big words and great learning.2For while I was with you, I made up my mind to forget everything except Jesus Christ and especially his death on the cross.3 So when I came to you, I was weak and trembled all over with fear,4and my teaching and message were not delivered with skillful words of human wisdom, but with convincing proof of the power of God's Spirit.5Your faith, then, does not rest on human wisdom but on God's power.
God's Wisdom:
6Yet I do proclaim a message of wisdom to those who are spiritually mature. But it is not the wisdom that belongs to this world or to the powers that rule this world—powers that are losing their power.7The wisdom I proclaim is God's secret wisdom, which is hidden from human beings, but which he had already chosen for our glory even before the world was made.8 None of the rulers of this world knew this wisdom. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.9 However, as the scripture says,
“What no one ever saw or heard,
what no one ever thought could happen,
is the very thing God prepared for those who love him.”
10But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes.11It is only our own spirit within us that knows all about us; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God.12We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us.
13So then, we do not speak in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual truths to those who have the Spirit.14Whoever does not have the Spirit cannot receive the gifts that come from God's Spirit. Such a person really does not understand them, and they seem to be nonsense, because their value can be judged only on a spiritual basis.15Whoever has the Spirit, however, is able to judge the value of everything, but no one is able to judge him.16 As the scripture says,
“Who knows the mind of the Lord?
Who is able to give him advice?”
We, however, have the mind of Christ.

REFLECT
How does Paul describe himself in verses 1-4? What does he say enabled him to deliver his message to the Corinthians? Reread verse 2. Why is Jesus’s death on the cross central to Paul’s message? What is “God’s secret truth” (verse 1) and “God secret wisdom” (verse 7)? Why was this wisdom hidden from the rulers of the world? Is such wisdom still hidden today? What does Paul say about God’s Spirit (verses 10-16)? In what ways has God’s Spirit enlightened your understanding of “God’s secret truth” and “God’s secret wisdom”?
#Pray
Sovereign God, you are the source of all true wisdom. Enlighten me with your Spirit so that I may grow stronger in faith day by day, learning more and more about you and trusting in you and in your love. Amen.
